I was on Facebook the other day and a friend posted an image of a rocket stove which was made out of a 5 gallon metal bucket and I thought to myself maybe theres something smaller that can be used to construct this handy stove. Rocket Mass Heater

Here’s a video I that was recommended to me on youtube called Rocket Mass Heater. Basically it’s a method of building a sideways fire that is used to heat up your house or other building. These heaters are used completely underground or above ground enclosed in a mass of clay/rocks/bricks. In most cases it’s merely a cob construction around the heater. It warms the entire construction that’s built around the heater and also has a barrel sticking out the top of the object which emits heat into the room as well. continue reading »

Anybody that has a compost pile or bin knows that basic stuff like leaves, sticks, apple cores, banana peels, and other plant type materials can be put in the pile but I bet a lot of you don’t know that there are tons of other normal household items that can be put in as well. Here’s a really neat raised garden bed that I ran across. It’s called Hugelkultur which is an ancient form of sheet composting developed in Eastern Europe. It uses woody wastes such as fallen logs and pruned branches in order to build soil fertility and improve drainage and moisture retention. continue reading »
